Report from Eurosense 2020

E3S Eurosense Student Pieter Punter Award – Julia Sick

I would like to thank the European Sensory Science Society (E3S) and the scientific committee for the E3S Eurosense Student Pieter Punter Award that I received at the 9th European Conference on Sensory and Consumer Research.

The topic of this year’s Eurosense was “A sense of innovation” – and this year Eurosense really innovated itself in many ways. The year 2020 brought along many challenges due to Covid-19, but also plenty of opportunities. Instead of executing the conference like initially planned in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Eurosense was held as a full “Live and On-demand” conference for its first time. I cannot even imagine how much organizational effort and logistical challenges were running behind the scenes, but the organizers made an excellent job in converting the conference into an interactive and multifaceted platform for experts in the field of sensory and consumer science. It was not only possible to watch a multitude of high-quality oral presentations, but also to take the time to “walk through” poster presentations and to directly ask questions to the presenters. A big advantage of the online conference was also that live presentations were recorded, which enabled to watch presentations in case you missed them or simply watch them again.

I started the conference by attending the Early Career Researcher Seminar, which aims to give PhD students and young researchers the possibility to present their research for a wide audience. On day 3, after the student award ceremony, I held my oral presentation entitled “Development of an emoji-based self-report measurement tool to measure emotions elicited by foods in pre-adolescents” in the parallel session “Beyond liking”. It was my first time to speak “in front” of so many people and I am very thankful for this massive opportunity.

Thank very much for an inspiring conference with such a density of knowledgeable and talented experts in the field of sensory and consumer science that I could only learn from! Hope to see you (and then hopefully in person) at the 10th Eurosense conference in Turku in 2022.
